Monthly Review (July 2025)
Each month this summer, we compile a list of helpful articles from other sites, in a variety of categories, for youth workers to read, reflect on, and/or discuss with parents and volunteers. If you have any articles you’d like to suggest, we’d love for you to share those in the Youth Pastor Theologian Facebook group. That’s a great way to bring them to our attention and to discuss them with like-minded youth workers! (Inclusion in this list does not imply complete agreement with the publishing source, but we have found these articles to be beneficial.)
Youth Ministry
A Theological Vision for Discipling the Next Generation, by Bob Thune (The Gospel Coalition)
Discipling the next generation isn’t just about the kids; it’s about how God uses them to shape us. As we teach children to trust and obey, we’re challenged to do the same, repenting of our unbelief and leaning into God’s grace. This mutual growth creates a vibrant culture of discipleship where everyone grows together in the gospel.
A Word of Encouragement to Weary Children’s Ministers, by Allyn Bock (Rooted)
So, when the spit-up dries on your favorite shirt and the volunteers cancel and the budget is cut and the schemes of the Enemy come against you, take heart: the battle is won. So, go and make disciples of all nations—and all ages—knowing that he is with us always, even to the end of the age (Matt. 28:19-20).
Biblical & Theological Studies
The Brilliant Apologetic Strategy of the Ancient Church, by Michael J. Kruger (Canon Fodder)
One of the benefits of studying the history of early Christianity is that we quickly realize that what we are facing in the modern day is far from new. Each challenge to the faith might seem new—sometimes leading to an unnecessary panic among some—but the early church faced similar (and often much worse) things before.
6 Passages That Help Us Develop a Theology of Disability, by Sandra Peoples (Crossway)
The Bible isn’t a disability ministry handbook, but it’s a head and heart book—it teaches us how to think about disabilities and how to treat those with disabilities (including how to view ourselves if we are ever diagnosed with a disability).
Cultural Reflection & Contextualization
Joy Among the Stoics, by Zach Howard (Desiring God)
Today, however, Seneca is back. Epictetus is dropping truth-bombs on Twitter. And Marcus Aurelius — although always appreciated in the military — is having a breakout moment with workout bros. In other words, ancient Stoicism is enjoying a modern renaissance.
Understanding Gender Ethics and Loving Your Neighbor through a Biblical Lens, by Terry Hollifield (The Center for Faith & Culture)
Yet, despite all the efforts to remedy this, confusion about identity is not going away. In fact, it is deepening. We are in the middle of a cultural moment where it is vital (especially for Christians) to step back and think clearly about what identity really is.
Pastoral Ministry
What to Ask During the Candidating Process, by Scott Hurst (The Gospel Coalition Canada)
A few years removed from the process, I wanted to write something for young pastors beginning to candidate at churches. Think of it as advice from an older brother. What questions should you ask churches during this process?
Dear Pastor, Stay on the Line, by David Jackman (Crossway)
The privilege and responsibility of biblical preaching is to be the channel through which God’s truth is conveyed with faithfulness, accuracy, and transformational purpose. This means cultivating a humility that submits to what the Bible says. The preacher shows reverence for the Lord by rightly handling the revelation he has given.
Family & Parents
Ten Principles for Dealing With Difficult Parents, by Jim Newheiser (New Growth Press)
There are many books telling parents how to deal with the challenges of raising their children and navigating the various challenges of parenthood. I myself have written a few! But not much has been written to help adult children address the challenges they often face with their parents.
How Parents Can Get School Choice Right, by Justin N. Poythress (Time and Chance)
As you walk humbly with God, fumbling and repenting, you can trust God to take care of your kids even when you don’t make the perfect choice. The Bible offers no guarantees, but if parents fear the Lord, love their children, and take up the mantle of being the chief educator, they will have nothing to regret.
